Ayat Al kursi is called the "Verse of the throne" as the throne of Allah has been mentioned in it. It's the 255th Ayah (verse) of Surat Al-Baqarah, and it includes 17 of God's names and describes Allah's most important characteristics. It says: "Allah! There is no god but Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who could intercede in His presence without His permission? He knows what is in front of them and what is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what he gives them. His throne includes the heavens and the earth, and he is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous. {255}" Surah Al-Baqarah.

What does Ayat Al-Kursi mean or imply?

Now that we know what is Ayat Al Kursi, and what does it say, let's dig deeper into what it means line by line.

"Allah! There is no god but Him."

Allah is one. He has no partner, and no one else got the power he has.

"The Alive."

Allah does not die. His existence is forever. He creates and gets people to die, and he stays still.

"The Eternal."

He is the only one taking over this universe. All of our matters and dest are in his hands.

"Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him."

Allah does not sleep, not even for minutes. Allah does not forget or drop out of our matters.

"Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth."

He owns absolutely everything. Everything in the universe and the skies belong back to him. He even owns us as he created us from dust.

"Who could intercede in His presence without His permission?"

This is a rhetorical question, which has no actual answer but the fact that no one can do anything related to the balance of deeds of each Muslim without the permission of Allah.

"He knows what is in front of them and what is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what he gives them."

This part is clear, as no one knows as much as Allah who knows everything even what we hide in our hearts. Allah says: "Unquestionably, they disbelievers turn away their breasts to hide

from Him. Unquestionably, [even] when they cover themselves in their clothing, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. {5}" Surah Hud

"His throne includes the heavens and the earth, and he is never weary of preserving them."

Guarding and controlling the universe is never heavy for Allah.

"He is the Sublime, the Tremendous."

No one is in a higher position than Allah, No one is greater than Allah.

Why you should memorize Ayat Al-Kursi?

Ayat Al-Kursi keeps the evil and the devil away from you

Reciting Ayatul Kursi every morning and evening protects you from the devilish ideas. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entrusted me to protect the charity of Ramadan. Someone came to me and began taking from the food. I took hold of him and I said, "I will certainly take you to the Messenger of Allah!" Abu Huraira told the story to the Prophet and he said, "The man told me that when I go to bed, I should recite the verse of the throne. Allah would appoint a protector with me and no devil would come near to me until morning." The Prophet said, "He told you the truth, although he is a liar. That was Satan." Sahih Al Bukhari.

Ayat Al-Kursi leads you to heaven

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi after each prayer gets you to enter the heaven of Allah. Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever recites the 'verse of the Throne' (ayat al-kursi) after every prescribed prayer, there will be nothing standing between him and his entry into Paradise but death." Sahih Al-Albani.

It adds more than 2380 good deed to your balance

Ayat Al kursi has 238 letters, and our prophet said that reciting one letter from the Holy Quran gives you one good deed multiplied in 10. "Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will receive one good deed, and the one good deed grants more ten good deeds like it. I do not

say that alif-lam-meem is one letter, but rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter." Sahih At-Tirmidhi.

It sounds hard until you start. It's like disciplining your memory to grasp more information whenever you memorize new verses of the Holy Quran. It's believed that people who train their brains to remember things have a better memory than those who don't. Besides the scientific benefit of memorizing the Holy Quran, it has a lot of spiritual and religious benefits as Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One who is proficient in reciting the Qur'an is associated with the noble, pious (angel) scribes. As for he who stammers when reciting the Qur'an and find it difficult for him, he will be granted a double reward" (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Check this article if you want to know more reasons why you should learn the Holy Quran.

In this article, I will tell you three top-secret ways to memorize the Holy Quran efficiently.

Seek a professional tutor

It's always better to have one person that can grant you his experience and make it easier for you without having to search a lot and get lost between the various resources on the internet.

However, you shouldn't trust anyone, only people who hold Ijazah (a certificate that admits that they are fully capable of reading and teaching the Holy Quran) will help you understand every word you read, hence, you will be more equipped to digest every single Ayah and memorize it correctly because you are not only keeping some sentence in mind, you understand what you're doing. They will also teach you recitation and the proper ways of pronouncing the characters whether they're connected or separated, in all the different cases.

If you're considering this option, we recommend checking our plans as our tutors are not only Ijazah holders, but also they're Al Azhar graduated with 10 years of experience in teaching the Holy Quran.

The 8 by 20 rule

If you are willing to memorize the Holy Quran all by yourself, then you should consider trying this way of practice:

1. Pick 8 Ayahs (verses) that you want to memorize.
2. Repeat each one (separated) 20 times.
3. Repeat from verse 1 to verse 4 (sequentially) 20 times. 4. Repeat from verse 5 to verse 8 (sequentially) 20 times. 5. Repeat from verse 1 to verse 8 (sequentially) 20 times.

This methodology has been proven to be so effective especially with the Surahs that have few verses. However, you might find it a bit difficult if you start with Surah that has more than 150

verses. Start with the 30th part of the Holy Quran, as it includes so many short Surahs. By the time you reach the long Surahs, you probably will be able to memorize many verses in less than 20 times of repeating because after all, memorizing the Holy Quran is a matter of consistency and good practice.

Relate every piece of verse to the big picture

Recalling information from your mind is hard when the knowledge you have is solid. By solid, I mean that you don't understand what you kept in your memory and why you're keeping it. We advise whoever is trying to memorize the Holy Quran to do two things:

  1. Every time you start memorizing the Holy Quran, look for Hadith and Islamic supplicants that implies its benefits and importance, then renew your intention and your determination.

  2. Look for the meaning of each verse and the situation when and where it's been revealed, try to comprehend why Allah has sent this specific Ayah (verse) before you begin memorizing.

Each part of any verse has a reason why it's been chosen, and I will give you an example...

"But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. {39} Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent. {40}" Surah Al-Ma'idah

These two Ayahs end with varieties of characteristics of Allah. When you try to memorize them, you might get confused about which verse ends with what? but when you comprehend each one, you'll discover that Ayah {39} is implying asking for God's forgiveness, so it's kinda normal to end with telling us the traits of Allah that is around accepting our repentance. Ayah {40} is implying God's ability to forgive and to punish, so it ends with reminding us of how Allah can do anything.

Remember that reading and memorizing the Holy Quran boosts your balance of good deeds and raises your station in heaven. Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best among you [Muslims] are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
